Flowering Spurge

Flowering Spurge
Euphorbia corollata

This is not an extremely common flower, and it is small and delicate enough that in the Midwest you have to be really looking for it in order to see it. It's common name, "Spurge" comes from the Latin word "expurgare," "to purge," because the plant has been used as a laxative, in very small doses, but it can be fatal in large ones. the butterfly in this picture is an Eastern Meadow Fritillary.
