Until the middle of this century, when the use of electonic navigation
systems became widespread, sailing ships relied on tables of
astronomical data to compute their courses and positions. The tables
were called ephemerides, and many sailors still like to have an
ephemeris on hand. One of the most popular is Reed's
Nautical Almanac.
